Book Review – The Blade Itself (FL #1) – Joe Abercrombie

This was my first book from Joe Abercrombie and has been on my TBR pile for quite some time. Definitely a shame since this was a beautifully told story and I can’t wait to continue through the other books of this world. I gave this book an easy 4/5. You should definitely take the plunge if you are considering it.

**Spoilers Below**

Our main characters are Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, Nobleman Captain Jezal dan Luthar, Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, and the wizard, Bayaz. Set forward into an epic fantasy land outfitted with swords, war and great palaces, we get to ride along with each of them as the threads of fate untwine.

Logan has decided he wants to try to be a better man after a lifetime of brutal killing but his past just wont die. In the first few pages we discover he was with a crew of other nortthmen, who had all gone rogue against the self declared King of the North, Bethod. While camped in the countryside, they are attacked by undead creatures named Flatheads. Logan is forced to jump off a cliff face to surviv, falling into an icy river and seperated form his group.

When he wakes in the river and climbs back to the hilltop, it appears his friends were all killed. Alone with his pot, he decides to keep moving on, hunting as he needs to for food. At one junction in the forest, he calls fire spirits for company and they notify him that a magi looking for him is just ahead of him. Here he meets Quia, the First of the Magi’s apprentice and summons him to Bayaz.

Bethod comes to visit them and demand the Magi kneels for him, but he refuses and means to declarer war on the Union. Bayaz leaves his fortress and takes his apprentice and Logen to Aldua, the capitol of the Union. In Aldu, their reception is one of disbelief since he hasnt made an appearance in literal ages of men. The closed council holds a ceremonial extra chair just for him, but no one believes the Magi is who he claims to be.

Gllokta works for the Inquisition office under, under Arch Lector Sult, and is tasked with finding a way to disprove that Bayaz is who he says he is. Unique to Glokta’s POV are italics that outline what he would rather say after he says the proper thing. I did enjoy his part very well as he makes the most of his life with his ruined body and missing teeth.

He delves into the library hoping for some information on the Magi and uncovers the Master Maker tower that has stood empty and sealed up for centuries has a key, and Bayaz, if he is real, should have it.

Meanwhile, Lothar, spends all of his time training to win a famous fencing competition that Aldua puts on every year. He also falls into lust with his friend and army mate, Colleum West. West suspects them and begs Lothar not to see her.

The day of the contest finds Bayaz, Quia, and Logan in the crowd watching. Lothar makes it to the end match but it badly outmatched by a outlands opponent, Georst. He is within his last mark when Bayaz bewitches him and forces out a victory instead. The evening of his celebration, Glokta arrives and notifies Bayaz that he can verify his identity by providing the key to the Maker’s Tower, which he does. He takes Glokta, Lothar, and Logen on a tour of the tower after he opens the base.

More intrigues abound within it’s pages but do keep in mind while this is an amazing read, it is not a happy book. I would call his style a cross between Tolkien and Stephan King. I still recommend it for reading!

1/6/2021 – A Day to Live in Infamy

Like many of us, I tried to go about my work this week, but it was interrupted by the obviously attempted coup of this country by MAGA supporters. For me, it was an outrageous day, which is saying something after our last 4 years of Trump as a president. It is so real.

This fabric of our ”democracy has been under fire from Trump and many Republicans’, forcing along Trump’s agenda. He was nothing more than a dictator long before yesterday. A group of MAGA supporters breaching the senate and house chambers on the day Biden was meant to be voted in. The day to confirm election results is an obvious coup attempt.

While many of us who understand the implications of this weeks activities, we also demand justice. It is obvious, the difference in police officer attempts to this, compared to the very different response we witnessed during Black Lives Matter protests this past year.

I am incredibly disappointed in us as a country. I am disappointed in Pence’s refusal to invoke the 25th amendment, when it is so obviously the required response we need right now. Even now, we are fractured in out response to this white extremism, between GOP and Democrat representatives. He must be removed now so he can no longer threaten us with a 2024 bid for president.

Not that it will mean anything from a rural girl from republic land, I stand with the focus that Trump must be removed from office and NOW. Nothing else is acceptable. We must not give up on bringing him and his family and his enablers to justice.

I demand justice, NOW.

Happy New Year 2020 (Somehow)

Somehow, we made it this far, after the chaos that was 2020. First, the pandemic hit the US in February and forced most of us into lockdowns by mid-March, while most recently, we watched Trump deny the legal declaration that he was no longer president. The sheer weight of 2020s history, will make it difficult for future generations to ever, completely comprehend it.

There are many sites posting the full year of ‘most unexpected’ events of 2020, (https://mashable.com/article/what-happened-2020/) or (https://cbs4indy.com/news/20-noteworthy-things-happening-in-2020/0. though there are several out there.) Each contain unique takes on 2020, and the news stories they felt were the most important. I will follow up on the items I felt more strongly, than the rest. Not to imply any of these more important than the other but, for whatever my thoughts count for these days.

1 Death of Chadwick Boseman and BLM.

For someone who is not black but appreciates black culture, I feel like Chad and BLM go hand in hand. He was the epitome of beauty and grace in life and death. Black Panther was a testament to his spirit and I, personally, loved every minutes of it. Losing him, we lost part of our soul as a human race. He was also a constant statement to BLM and bringing equality to Hollywood as a whole. I was excited to see our country come together to demand change. I also really hope the dialogue continues into 2022. (Source:https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/06/black-artists-letter-hollywood-divest-from-police)

2 – Australia faced devastating fires, then California joined them later

This was hard to watch this year and our heart heart for the destructive path, fire left behind.

We live within the typical higher snow area, and the current snow situation has me concerned for this year, as well. Unless we get dumped on in early 2021, we will all be in the same situation, with little snow runoff, and our years of willful denial of Science and pollution will create our just desserts. This one of many years, I am embarrassed to be American, since we reuse to acknowledge science.

3- Trump teargassed peaceful protesters, journalists, priests, and bystanders for a photo op with a bible.

This was, to me, the saddest example of Trump’s ignorance of how the American Justice System is meant to work. We complain about this exact thing when it happens in other countries but no one that could, held him responsible.

4 – People honest-to-god believed in a baseless conspiracy theory about Wayfair sex trafficking children through cabinets

Really? It was 2020 after all, and at least some of us were stuck inside and bored with our lockdowns. I have no words to express the epitome of ignorant that gave this any traction at all. Most days of the last 4 years, I have been embarrassed by Trump to claim I am American. Items like this obvious ignorance and unwillingness to accept reason, will always wear on my faith in us a nation.

5 – President Trump was first impeached and then, acquitted.

Another instance of wishing I could melt into a tree…There were sooooo many in his last four years.

6 – Discovered water on the moon and life on Mars.

Since I couldn’t do a list with only Trump embarrassment moments…This is also very exciting for all of us patiently waiting for flying cars and that premier hotel thing on the moon. Good job, guys!

7 – Macaulay Culkin turned 40. Because we all needed something to laugh about right?

Ha, ha, ha, sigh, OK I feel old. Really old.

8 – I really wanted more than 7, but some long works days cut into giving this post everything I wanted it to be.

Nonsense, nonsense, nonsense. Lol.

Wishing you all, a wonderful Happy New Year. May it be full of love.

Merry Christmas

Ladies and Gentlemen!

What a year this 2020 has been, but I am always grateful for the Christmas Holiday. As a child, I never understood some parents asking children for socks as a Christmas gift until I became an adult. Well, maybe I can’t claim adulthood, but at least the age one usually reaches adulthood. Overnight my socks became a much bigger deal to me since my feet are so often cold, all. the. time. Even in the dead of summer, don’t ask me how, they don’t play by the rules. So this year I am thankful for receiving multiple rounds of those plush, mid-calf socks.

Santa was listening. To everyone else out there, I hope today was a great one.

Drunk History – Awesome discovered TV Show

I recently discovered the Drunk History TV show, which is embarrassing to me, considering my TV watching habits. I watch Comedy Central, religiously, for both the South Park and Office reruns, as well as the Daily Show with Trevor Noah. It wasn’t until this week that I discovered the awesomeness that is Drunk History.

Drunk History, opened with the Christmas History Special, where they discussed the history of Christmas trees and how they came to be popular among our current celebrations. This show is a genius premise since many people tend to be bored with history and just memorizing facts, while this show creates a fun way for the adults of us to learn new things. Since many of us are forgoing Christmas celebrations of our own, with the pandemic at terrifying case levels, we’re certainly spending more time in front of the TV.

Have you guys seen this show before? I noticed it first premiered in 2013 but they missed a 2020 season. I am hoping they pick it back up after all this madness of 2020 is subsided.

Check it out for yourself since amazon prime has it for $2. https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B077W2DS48/ref=atv_dp_season_select_s0

Veteran’s Day

A day of remembrance of all those who gave their lives to protect us. In light of this weekend, I spent some time in the military end of the books floating around and purchased Brandon Webb’s ‘Among Heroes’. He presents a snapshot of his time as a Navy Seal, but most specifically, about 8 friendships that shaped him as a person within the military.

A beautiful tribute to his fallen comrades, I really enjoyed getting to know them. It was equally humbling to receive that glimpse into their daily lives. I strongly recommend it for reading, but a fair warning that I cried several times throughout it.

I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all veterans on Veteran’s Day.

Feast of Fall

Oh, what it is fall but a chance to rest our weary selves before the plume of winter takes hold.

It is campfires and smores and my soul in sharp relief

It is our chance at self reflection, if we bothered to look.

It is the deep breath, if we but accept it within ourselves.

Fall isn’t a lifestyle it’s my religion,

It’s out here for all of us, if we only have courage.

How do you feel about Fall?

The Antithesis

I am shackled

I am undone

I am ethereal

I am home

I am doubt’s castle

I am raw abandon

I am leaking stars

I am oozing passion

I long for a home I have never encountered

I long for this earth to grow teeth and devour me

I chase lightning, peering hard behind every hill

I chase moon beams, in the elfin darkness we meet

A three-way heartbeat we share.

May we never stop wondering and thinking.
