Book Review – Sin and Salvation (MC Syndicates 3) by Cate Corvin

This was my first novel in the world of Black Hearts MC. Even though this is the third book published in this series, they don’t have to be read in order and each book is published by a different author. I love that this was set around a motorcycle club set within the boundaries of their city, Concordia. I loved the heroine, Venus, and her succubus personality. The leaders of the motorcycle club were alpha demons and I liked this take on an alpha demon story. Crow, Zane, and Aeron eventually become mates with Venus. I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as other things I have read from this author, but I still enjoyed this. This just felt a bit short and rushed compared to her other longer series books. I liked the tone and plot as well as the way Concordia was set up. The most powerful demons carved out sections of the city to own and run for themselves. (4/5 rating)

Book Review – The Dead Ringer by Michaela Haze

This story centers around a nightmare demon forced to survive working for a fae after her unit in Hell was killed. I was excited for the premise of this book and the chance to try something from this author for the first time. I’m sad this is standalone since I loved this world and its characters. Haze developed better characters in this standalone than others I have seen in multiple book series. I loved everything about this, and this quickly became a favorite book. I’m anxious to read all the books that Michaela Haze has published, since they will likely become favorites too.
The writing style and plot pulled me into this standalone book. Haze kept the tone suspenseful but funny as Mara’s nature kept me laughing and rooting for her to succeed. I think it’s safe to say that Mara has become one of my favorite demon stories so far. I loved learning about her nightmare nature. Her commanding officer, Warren, was her polar opposite with his commanding and serious demeanor. Her colleagues of Team P, Remi, Jae, Hart, and Hugo don’t initially know that Mara is undercover and hiding in the body their colleague, Frankie. Warren enlists Mara’s help from her boss after Frankie’s unit is killed suspiciously. With the possibility of a betrayer in their midst, Warren brings the vision of Frankie back to their compound to flush out the killer. (5/5 rating)

Book Review – For The Throne (Wilderwood 2) by Hannah F. Whitten

I had high expectations for this since the first book was one of my favorite reads of 2021. Since I don’t read nearly as much young adult anymore, that means it must be exceptional. I’m sure I’ll be in the minority when I say I didn’t like this one as much. I was excited to read about Neve’s side of the story after she is trapped in the Shadowlands. I loved the lore side of this story that expounded on many of the plot points of book one and two. The worldbuilding remained exceptional but the pace felt much slower to me. I had to keep coming back to finish it a few chapters at a time. I felt like Neve and Solmir don’t get time to form the same connection that Red and her Wolf created in book one. I loved Red in book one, but her actions while attempting to rescue Neve were frustrating. I didn’t enjoy Neve in book one, but I found a way to like her is this one, especially with her seemingly insurmountable task of defeating the Kings with Solmir‘s help. Raffe, the Wolf, and Solmir were the characters that remained the same for me in both. This wasn’t for me, but I am sure plenty of other people will love it. (3/5 rating)

Book Review – Embrace Me Darkly (Dark Alliance 1) by Kira James

Checked out with kindle unlimited, February 2023 to test this debut series by Kira James. Sara is out celebrating a huge win at her prosecutor’s office when she meets a beautiful, mysterious stranger at her favorite bar. After one passionate night together, Sara discovers he is a vampire named Luke and implicated in the murder of a local retired judge. As a prosecutor for a supernatural judicial system, Sara and Luke will be forced to work together to overcome a much bigger threat to their city than Luke. This was the first in a six-book series. This was an engaging mix of supernatural crime and romance. This world is also rife with political alliances, betrayal, and webs of deceit. I liked James’s take on Vampires and the laws governing them. The pace remains blinding from the first page to the last. I struggled to rate this book since there were aspects that I loved and hated. I know I will read book 2 eventually to see how this plot progresses. (3/5 rating)

Book Review – Run & Hide (Myths & Monsters 1) by Beatrix Hollow

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t pick this out for its cover. Ava is the daughter of a famous ghost hunting family but terrified of taking over the family business. She sets out on a cross country photography trip with her childhood friend, Caspian, to escape her family’s grasp. Only to find the family business catch up with them all too soon. I’m grateful I checked this out with Kindle membership first since I had several issues with this story. I liked the first half, but the second half careened into a mess. Ava frustrated me at several turns, including her inconsistencies between Caspian and Mothman interactions. For someone from a paranormal family, I’m not sure I feel like her running from Caspian was a real response, among others: she ran way a lot. Ava ruined a lot of this for me, with dumb decision after dumb decision. I enjoyed the horror aspects of the story, and I did like Caspian as a water shapeshifter character. The Mothman was as inconsistent as Ava, at least with the portion of the plot he was in. I felt like this had potential, but this just wasn’t for me. (2/5 rating)

Book Review – Sunshine and Bullets (The Bullets 1) by Coralee June

Checked out with my kindle unlimited membership in January 2023. I wanted to love this book, but I could not get into any of the characters. I understand that our MC has an abusive past, as does the other romantic interests in her life, but I was a bit disappointed that she let Gavriel walk all over her. To me, it didn’t appear that she had changed as a character much, even though she calls herself strong. I would have believed it if she had told him off or tried to solve her own problems at all. Sorry this one just wasn’t for me. (2/5 rating)

Book Review – The Wife Before by Shanora Williams

This was my first novel by Shanora Williams. I received this book free from the author for an honest review. This story begins with our female MC Samira Wilder. Samira has always struggled to keep jobs and pay the rent because she refuses to waste her life away the same way their mother did. In a bind for money, she takes a one-night celebrity serving event where she meets pro golfer, Roland Graham. They fall up for each hard, celebrate a quick engagement, before she moves into his Colorado mansion. Soon, she discovers an abandoned shed of his deceased wife that Roland hasn’t entered since her death. Samira offers to clean it out and repurpose it, but the secrets she uncovers could undo her new happy life.
Alert: Spoilers below.
I struggled with my rating for this book. While the ending was nothing I could have predicted, I struggled to get there with Samira as the main character. While I can sympathize that the American work system is broken, Samira seemed to have unrealistic expectations of when her brother should be helping her out. She had no problems asking for money while at the same time complaining that he worked too much and would follow their mother’s footsteps. I could not connect with her as a character and Melanie and Dylan were truly monstrous. Roland was the only redeeming part of this story. I’m glad other people were able to enjoy this, but unfortunately, I wasn’t one of them. (2/5 rating)

Book Review – The Blade Itself (FL #1) – Joe Abercrombie

This was my first book from Joe Abercrombie and has been on my TBR pile for quite some time. Definitely a shame since this was a beautifully told story and I can’t wait to continue through the other books of this world. I gave this book an easy 4/5. You should definitely take the plunge if you are considering it.

**Spoilers Below**

Our main characters are Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, Nobleman Captain Jezal dan Luthar, Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, and the wizard, Bayaz. Set forward into an epic fantasy land outfitted with swords, war and great palaces, we get to ride along with each of them as the threads of fate untwine.

Logan has decided he wants to try to be a better man after a lifetime of brutal killing but his past just wont die. In the first few pages we discover he was with a crew of other nortthmen, who had all gone rogue against the self declared King of the North, Bethod. While camped in the countryside, they are attacked by undead creatures named Flatheads. Logan is forced to jump off a cliff face to surviv, falling into an icy river and seperated form his group.

When he wakes in the river and climbs back to the hilltop, it appears his friends were all killed. Alone with his pot, he decides to keep moving on, hunting as he needs to for food. At one junction in the forest, he calls fire spirits for company and they notify him that a magi looking for him is just ahead of him. Here he meets Quia, the First of the Magi’s apprentice and summons him to Bayaz.

Bethod comes to visit them and demand the Magi kneels for him, but he refuses and means to declarer war on the Union. Bayaz leaves his fortress and takes his apprentice and Logen to Aldua, the capitol of the Union. In Aldu, their reception is one of disbelief since he hasnt made an appearance in literal ages of men. The closed council holds a ceremonial extra chair just for him, but no one believes the Magi is who he claims to be.

Gllokta works for the Inquisition office under, under Arch Lector Sult, and is tasked with finding a way to disprove that Bayaz is who he says he is. Unique to Glokta’s POV are italics that outline what he would rather say after he says the proper thing. I did enjoy his part very well as he makes the most of his life with his ruined body and missing teeth.

He delves into the library hoping for some information on the Magi and uncovers the Master Maker tower that has stood empty and sealed up for centuries has a key, and Bayaz, if he is real, should have it.

Meanwhile, Lothar, spends all of his time training to win a famous fencing competition that Aldua puts on every year. He also falls into lust with his friend and army mate, Colleum West. West suspects them and begs Lothar not to see her.

The day of the contest finds Bayaz, Quia, and Logan in the crowd watching. Lothar makes it to the end match but it badly outmatched by a outlands opponent, Georst. He is within his last mark when Bayaz bewitches him and forces out a victory instead. The evening of his celebration, Glokta arrives and notifies Bayaz that he can verify his identity by providing the key to the Maker’s Tower, which he does. He takes Glokta, Lothar, and Logen on a tour of the tower after he opens the base.

More intrigues abound within it’s pages but do keep in mind while this is an amazing read, it is not a happy book. I would call his style a cross between Tolkien and Stephan King. I still recommend it for reading!
