Book Review – The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves 1) by Roshani Chokshi

I feel like this was another instance of walking into reading a book based on high expectations. This book won an award and I had this recommended to me by many other readers. At least for me, I was disappointed with most of this book. I didn’t love her characters and their dialogue had me questioning where the historical aspects were meant to be since they didn’t seem to match. Her writing style didn’t draw me in or build any suspense throughout the plot. The pace was awkward since it didn’t seem to always line up with the plot. This was an all-right road but I’m glad I checked this out with kindle unlimited before purchasing it. (2/5 rating)
Checked out with kindle unlimited, August 2023.

Book Review – Starless by Jacqueline Carey

This was my first stand alone, young adult book by Jacqueline Carey. Khai, is raised as a warrior within the desert and chosen to be the sworn protector of princess Zariya. Khai and Zariya embark upon a journey that spans countries and oceans to stop an ancient evil, Miasmu. I know my tastes as a reader have changed much since I purchased this book in 2020 and this book is a case of,’ it’s me, not you’. Carey created a vivid world of potential with absorbing characters. I loved the concept of this book, and the gender fluidity of the characters. I was intrigued by the story of gods and prophecies, but the pace felt slow until the end. I struggled to stay engaged in the story. I know I’m too old for this genre, but you might enjoy this novel. (2/5 rating)

Book Review – Rise of the Ranger – Philip Quantrell

This was my first Philip Quantrell Book but it did impress me beyond all expectations and sets the stage for the remaining of the saga. I gave this book an easy 4 out of 5. Despite the fact that he is self published, the writing is in no way lacking. I was immediately invested in his character and the political intrigue of the story.

**Alert Spoilers Below**

In this epic story line we have some of the typical players. A powerful race of elves, hell bent on destroying the human race that is wholly unsuspecting and unprepared for the coming invasion. An unseeingly group of wayward travelers that begin the book off by hating their differences. Even with these elements. The book was a masterful read in now way detracted from Phillips great storytelling. I stayed up late finishing this.

Asher is an assassin trained by the mysterious Arakesh, world’s best assassins, though he turned form this path to forge his own way 14 years ago. He is also an outlander and a ranger who assists cities and towns by killing monsters for pay. Nathaniel is an mid aged man employed by the Graycoats of the realm. Here they are a group of highly trained peace keepers that are not allowed to marry or have families.

Asher and Nathaniel’s paths diverge after King Rengar requests an audience with Asher. Nathaniel is sent to retrieve Asher with a Graycoat trainee in tow, Elaith. When they all return to Verda, Asher’s services are requested by the King. An Elf envoy with their Princess is due to land soon and he and the Graycoats are tasked with returning them to the keep in one piece.

Once the Elves enter Verda, their posse is attacked by a large party of Arakesh assassins. With Asher’s help, they dispatch them and eventually return to Rengar with no casualties. The Elf Princess, Reyna, along with Faylen and Mörygan present themselves as ambassadors to their nation, to create an alliance. Their true task is to spy for her father so they can coordinate the Elf invasion.

In the back ground, Rayna’s betrothed, Elf match, is in charge of the other half of the invasion, which includes aligning themselves with a dragon. His team advances on the mage school of Korkanath. Galanor’s team walks through the school leaving behind death and destruction. Eventually, they recover a grimoire that releases Malliath, a huge black dragon, from his enslavement. As Malliath tries to flee, Galanor and Gideon, one of the last surviving mages, secure a ride along his scale system.

Malliath flies them to a prison of both dragons and the elf Queen, Adilandra. The dragons escape and fly away leaving the trio to fight their way free of complex. In the huge Darkakin city, Malaysai, they discover an enormous army that is set to invade their neighbors, Illidan. Adilandra decides to follow the dragons the way they excited the city, in the hopes they can meet the dragons and fight with them against Valanis. She also hopes that by having their help, she can talk her husband out of his stubborn war that he has slated for men. Before they can depart, she is taken prisoner and this forces Gideon and Galanor to search for the dragons on their own. Dragon’s Bravog and IIlargo save them from their desert ascent and they discover Dragon’s Reach and the last Dragon Rider. Adriel.

Back in Illidan, Reyna and Faylan’s company take refuge at West Fallon, a Graycoat stronghold fortress. Asher is forced to be kept in a cell as the natural enemy to the Graycoats. Meanwhile, Alidyr,Valanis’ general, marches 500 Arakesh to West Fallon in the bid to retrieve Pandora’s Gem, which Asher was gifted in his childhood. Asher, Reyna, Nathanial and Faylen make a last stand with the Graycoats. After victory they decide to attempt to kill Valais while he sleeps under the amber enchantment with Asher’s gem portion.

They make it to where Valanis’ body should have been to find it except they find Alidyr alive and well, instead. It is here that Asher finally remember his childhood and he was gifted the gem before the Amber Spell was cast but he was inside it for a thousand years, before the gem cracked it open. A battle ensues, but Alidyr is too strong for them and takes Asher’s ring.

The ending fits nicely into the beginning of the next book which I will be reading soon.

Book Review – Uprooted – Naomi Novik

After a share of Naomi Novik books, she has become an instant read for me. The way she brings the world and characters alive us second to none. Her Uprooted title was the same rollercoaster ride i have come to expect from her. My rating was an obvious 5/5 and if you choose not to read my spoiler’s below, I highly recommend it to anyone wondering if you should take the plunge.

Book Review – The Blade Itself (FL #1) – Joe Abercrombie

This was my first book from Joe Abercrombie and has been on my TBR pile for quite some time. Definitely a shame since this was a beautifully told story and I can’t wait to continue through the other books of this world. I gave this book an easy 4/5. You should definitely take the plunge if you are considering it.

Our main characters are Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, Nobleman Captain Jezal dan Luthar, Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, and the wizard, Bayaz. Set forward into an epic fantasy land outfitted with swords, war and great palaces, we get to ride along with each of them as the threads of fate untwine.

Logan has decided he wants to try to be a better man after a lifetime of brutal killing but his past just wont die. In the first few pages we discover he was with a crew of other nortthmen, who had all gone rogue against the self declared King of the North, Bethod. While camped in the countryside, they are attacked by undead creatures named Flatheads. Logan is forced to jump off a cliff face to surviv, falling into an icy river and seperated form his group.

When he wakes in the river and climbs back to the hilltop, it appears his friends were all killed. Alone with his pot, he decides to keep moving on, hunting as he needs to for food. At one junction in the forest, he calls fire spirits for company and they notify him that a magi looking for him is just ahead of him. Here he meets Quia, the First of the Magi’s apprentice and summons him to Bayaz.

Bethod comes to visit them and demand the Magi kneels for him, but he refuses and means to declarer war on the Union. Bayaz leaves his fortress and takes his apprentice and Logen to Aldua, the capitol of the Union. In Aldu, their reception is one of disbelief since he hasnt made an appearance in literal ages of men. The closed council holds a ceremonial extra chair just for him, but no one believes the Magi is who he claims to be.

Gllokta works for the Inquisition office under, under Arch Lector Sult, and is tasked with finding a way to disprove that Bayaz is who he says he is. Unique to Glokta’s POV are italics that outline what he would rather say after he says the proper thing. I did enjoy his part very well as he makes the most of his life with his ruined body and missing teeth.

He delves into the library hoping for some information on the Magi and uncovers the Master Maker tower that has stood empty and sealed up for centuries has a key, and Bayaz, if he is real, should have it.

Meanwhile, Lothar, spends all of his time training to win a famous fencing competition that Aldua puts on every year. He also falls into lust with his friend and army mate, Colleum West. West suspects them and begs Lothar not to see her.

The day of the contest finds Bayaz, Quia, and Logan in the crowd watching. Lothar makes it to the end match but it badly outmatched by a outlands opponent, Georst. He is within his last mark when Bayaz bewitches him and forces out a victory instead. The evening of his celebration, Glokta arrives and notifies Bayaz that he can verify his identity by providing the key to the Maker’s Tower, which he does. He takes Glokta, Lothar, and Logen on a tour of the tower after he opens the base.

More intrigues abound within it’s pages but do keep in mind while this is an amazing read, it is not a happy book. I would call his style a cross between Tolkien and Stephan King. I still recommend it for reading!

Book Review – The Way of Shadows – Brent Weeks

This was my first Brent Weeks novel and I have to say I was more than pleasantly surprised, I loved it. The world of Azoth and his Master Blint was a wonderful adventure. The plot lines were well woven and I quite enjoyed the ending His world building was slightly confusing with so many different governments happening at once . It did take me about 100 pages to become vested in Azoth as a character but after that, the pace picked up nicely.

I gave this book a 3/5 stars. There are abuse and rape mentioned in this book, FYI, in case it’s not your thing.

**Spoiler’s Below**

The book begins with our main character, Azoth, a drifter within the Warrens Cenaria City. He is in a guild and looks after a younger girl, Doll Girl, and a slightly older Jarl. Abused by one of the Guild Fists, and through several twists, has the chance to become an assassin’s apprentice to Durzo Blint, if he manages to kill the Fist, Rat, before the night is over. Rat mutilated Doll Girl’s face and agrees if Durzo promises to save her.

Durzo saves Doll Girl and Azoth kills Rat eventually, becoming the wanted apprenticeship, but Durzo refuses to let him see Doll Girl or any girl for that matter as they are denied loving relationships. They can be used against assassins as a weak spot. Azoth gets paid by Durzo and soon becomes Doll Girls unknown benefactor so she may join a family and grow up within a normal family. Azoth trains to be a killer, but is never able to summon his hidden magical ability. Eventually, Durzo stages Azoth’s death so everyone thinks he is dead, after the King attempts to blackmail Durzo into his service. He becomes Kylar.

Kylar leaves Durzo’s house to stay with Count Rimbold Drake, an old dear friend of Durzo’s. He also learns to read from Mamma K, the sister of Durzo’s long lost love, Vonda. Momma K is also a member of the Sa’kage, and manages every brothel in the city. Kylar is never. At Drake’s he learns to behave in society, hanging out with the young Logan Gure, they become good friends. Around this time, Jarl also make a come back and eventually works himself up to be Momma K’s right hand man.

While both Durzo and Kylar are searching for ways that might let him use his talent, rumor has it one exists, hidden within the City. Momma K tells them, there may be one within the palace walls. Without telling each other they were going, Kylar discovers the ka’kari first, and after touching it, it bonds with him. Only one bond can happen per ka’kar, until they die. Kylar is now able to summon his magical power. In the palace scuffle, the King’s prince is murdered by his mistress but she tries to blame both Durzo and Kylar.

About this time, Roth, a previous Guild Fist is making politicalk moves, with aimes to joinSa’kage. It requires a vote, leading him to Momma K’s establishment. He knows she has a daughter, fathered by Durzo that she never told anyone about. He blackmails her into helping him. He ultimately uses this fact to blackmail Durzo as well. Durzo is called upon the murder every living heir and member of the royal family. Roth ultimately brings war upon the City by allowing  Khalidor troops through security gates and over bridges, into the city and palace. The entire Gyre family is killed except for his father, who was already assigned to a certain battle zone, while Logan is unwillingly forced to marry the King’s daughter, Jenine, for the good of the kingdom.

That night in the palace, through Roth, Durzo poisons the meat that everyone eats for dinner. Shortly after the remaining royal members die, Logan and Jenine are all that’s left. Roth hunts them down, murders Jenine, but leaves Logan alive so he can be fed to the Maw, a cannibalistic pit of the prisons. After Roth’s departure, Neph, his witch, secretly save Jenine with plans to add her to the GodKing’s already large collection of wives.

With Kylar’s help, Jarl attempts to hire a guard that would locate Logan and help him escape the palace. The shear number of witches, he is killed and Logan with no where else to hide and witches searching for him, chooses to enter the cannibal den. armed only with a knife and the key to the door. He does find Elene and Uly (Durzo and Momma K’s daughter), and releases them to escape. Killing Roth proves to be a difficult task as he is guarded by a room with plenty of soldiers and witches. Eventually, he kills them all and Roth but dies himself as well. IN death, he meets a figure called the Wolf. He is given the choice of heaven or hell OR an Immortal life. He chooses to return to life and escapes the palace. The Godking still took control of the country, forcing Elene, Kylar and Uly to flee together.

Book Review – David Estes – Fatemarked

David Estes’s – Fatemarked (book 1 of the series) was an amazing read. A high fantasy based series, with brilliant characters and wonderful plot lines, several layers thick. The plots covered a swath of main characters, that I enjoyed immensely. My personal favorites were Gwen and Roan. I give the first book a 4/5.

With a name like Fatemarked, it expectantly, brings the reader through our own fate. Are we the maters of our compass? Or, does some bigger picture out of our view, bring us to precise points in time for a higher purpose? A question that’s been chewed over for centuries already and will continue well after we pass on from this place.

*Alert* Spoilers past this point. *

In book 1, Fatemarked, we are introduced to a new world comprised of various countries in endless years of war. ‘Fatemaked’ humans are created, with peculiar markings on their skin, bestowing them with unique abilities. Some can control fire, while some are made of stone and difficult to kill, while others, (The Peacekeeper) can heal. I enjoyed the variations in geography and climates, particularly the Iron Forest, the northern frozen tundra to the southern deserts of the of Phanes.

The land is overrun by a Hundred Years War e every region of the four kingdoms is at war with some other region, just because that’show it’s been so long. No one remembers what peace felt like and generation after generation continues the viscous circle of killing each other.

Roan Loren is our main character for this book and we discover that, fatemarked, he can heal himself from any grievous wounds. He can also use it to heal other people. We also meet Bane, fatemmarked with death and a deadly ability to kill without mercy. A long forgotten prophesy by the Oracle, declares that peace will return to the four kingdoms with Bane and Roan working together towards this goal. As opposing sides of the human spectrum, life and death, they have no choice but to find a way to work together. Bane must kill 8 war mongering rulers, 2 from each kingdom, according to the prophesy.

Bane and Roan become difficult for each other as Bane attempts to kill one of Roan’s friends, the prince of the King of the East. Roan refuses to let him die and injects enough life back into him that he eventually recovers. The duo spend much of the book at odds with each other over what is right and wrong.

This book is filled with a great sense of humor and I enjoyed the comebacks between characters. I can’t wait to finish the rest of the series.
