Book Review – A Deal with the Elf King (Married to Magic 1) by Elise Kova

This was my first novel by Elise Kova. Each novel is a standalone book within the series, so they can be read in any order. This story is set between the Elven world, the Kingdom of Midscape, and the human world, particularly the town of Capton. The female MC, a human named Luella, discovers she has Elven magic and must leave with the Elven King, Eldas to save both worlds. I loved the magic system and watching Luella grow into herself. Midscape is bold and vivid, set with political intrigue, and Kova creates a deeply addicting world. I fell into the pages and into and her writing style so it’s only fair that I continue with this series. I also have her “Air Awakens’ series on my TBR. I recommend this to anyone looking for a great retelling of The Beauty and the Beast. (3/5 rating)

Book Review – Princess of Dorsa (The Chronicles of Dorsa Book 1) – by Eliza Andrews

This was my first Eliza Andrews book. Princess of Dorsa, the first of two books, is set in a realm with many provinces with in, in the midst of war. It is a glorious plot wound around remember able characters. The plot was a but slow in the beginning but pick up after a quarter of the way through. It read quickly and I encourage you to give it a try today.

**Spoiler Alert**

The main character Tasia, is the daughters to an Emperor and has just reached the legal age to be married and bear children. Her father wants to set her up to a good match for the people, regardless of whether they each other. An assassins tries to murder her but she is saved by a pair of passing city guardsman. After that night, her father moves her up to be the sole heir, rather them being forced on a husband so soon. Even though she’s in love with her maid, she will have to marry eventually.

She begins attending proceeding meeting where realm barons arrive and give updates on the the wars. She is also given a female guard to follow her everywhere, Joselyn, and teach her how to fight. They end up on a mission to visit the warfront when the are attacked by a huge party, still trying to kill Tasia. When they finally reach the front, betrayal from unbelievable sources, kill her father and demand Tasia was the orchestrator. Her and Joselyn must fight their own and a war force to survive and save the kingdoms.

I didn’t really enjoy Tania all the time as she played the part of a spoiled royal in some scene where her actions were thoughtless. She did grow into her role, though, and became a force to he reckoned with.

Book Review – The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld 1) – by Gena Showalter

This was my first Gena Showalter book. I know I am in the minority of this opinion, but I couldn’t handle this book. Her characters were alight with the exception of Ashlyn, who was one of the most irritating female characters for me. The plot without the interference of the romance, was actually interesting and the only reason I actually made it the end. The plot with the romance was several romance tropes in one book, that really drug this down. I gave this book a 1/5.

**Spoilers Below**

I struggled to finish it, but since I paid for it, I felt required to just to see if magic happened, but alas, no magic! I really wanted to love the book, given the premise it is based on and the Pandora’s box aspect. The plot and characters made that impossible. Our hero, Maddox, was part of a regime of ancient god warriors that were jealous that Pandora was selected to guard a special box. This box held some of the worst monsters to walk the earth, and could not be kept, even in Hell. To punish them for not choosing them, they deceived Pandora and opened the box, freeing a wash of destruction on the earth. As punishment for their sins, they were forced to each house a demon from the box they opened in spurned pride. Then we meet Ashlyn, who (unbeknownst to her) works for a Hunter’s company and finds their fortress tucked into the hills. She plans to ask for help them for help with her ability to hear voices, and conversations from all points in time.

I struggled with both Maddox and Ashlyn instant need to bone as well as their declaration of ‘love’ after a few days of knowing each other. It seemed way to fast, even for the romance genre. With Ashlyn being a virgin as well, how would she even know what love is? Ashlynn made this very difficult to enjoy with her inability to be anything but a damsel in distress. I also had issues with the fact that Maddox fed Ashlynn Immortals version of alcohol, which obviously made her sick, and managed to fix it by giving her Tylenol? There were some other plot holes along this vein throughout.

I’m sorry I just couldn’t get into this and will not be continuing the series.
