December Fatigue

The rush of the season,
Digs under our crust.
Sometimes without reason,
We emerge under thick layers of dust.

Come January, we need to retract,
And reawaken our magic.
I’m reading my new book,
And adopting all things henotic.

Book Review – For the Wolf (Wilderwood #1) by Hannah F. Whitten

This was the first novel by author Hannah F. Whitten. This book was set in a fantasy realm set with enchanted forests and unexpected guardians. Red is our female protagonist, who is the second daughter born to their queen in centuries and she will be handed out over to the Wolf as she comes of age. Her sister and their first born, will be next in line for the throne. Red spends the first half of her life preparing for her death, to meet the Wolf. When she finally meets him however, nothing is as it seems. This was billed as a retelling, but I thought her magic system was original, not to mention the ending uncovers the Wolf’s hidden enemy and the drama surrounding their relationship. I was surprised to love this as much as I did and if you choose to give it a try, I suggest you read it was an open mind from the beginning. (4/5 rating)

Word of the Week – January 10th – Pennon

Here is my ‘word of the week’, to learn new words and give myself writing prompt opportunities. This week it is: ‘Pennon’.

Hunter

She stalks us from the shadows,
But her light steps trail behind us.
My sister grasped my wrist,
And hid us at the edge of the forest.

We were stuck mute,
As her huge black pennons,
Floated above us on her route.
They relaxed as she grew in distance.

Alive for another day.

On my TBR this January 2022

For me, the first book of the year is always a bit daunting. I get to sit down and really look at my massive TBR pile. The pile that seems to get bigger every year and I’m not certain how. Here is my TBR for the next few weeks…

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

Heart of a Witch (Embracing Darkness Collection) by Rebecca L. Garcia

A Court of Honey and Ash (Honey and Ice Trilogy #1) by Shannon Mayer & Kelly St. Clare

Midnight in Everwood by M.A. Kuzniar

Book Review – The Hollow Gods (The Chaos Cycle Duology #1) by A.J. Vrana

This was a debut novel of Canadian author, A.J. Vrana. It is the first in a two-part duology, The Chaos Cycle. This novel is set within the rural town of Black Hollow. Miya, who is a failing college student becomes main female character. While Kai is an orphan half wolf half man hybrid becomes our main male character. together they create an unlikely pair as local legends and fairy tales have townsfolk keeping a murderous secret. This was a spellbinding tale of betrayal, intrigue, and a compelling new magical system. I had to stay up late to finish this one. If you haven’t heard of this novel, I nominate adding this to your TBR for 2022. This was another easy 5/5 rating for me and will be shelved with my favorites.

Weekly Photo Prompt – January 5th – Northern lights

This is my photo prompt for the week. I hope we both find some inspiration within it.

Northern lights

The auroral symphony plays overhead,
The chill has burrowed beneath my shell,
I am a fly caught in the spider’s thread,
The brilliance of a lifetime in its spell.

Word of the Week – January 3rd – Metanoia

Here is my ‘word of the week’, to learn new words and give myself writing prompt opportunities. This week it is: ‘Metanoia’.

Harbinger

The crows used to beck at me,
To join their crusade of scavengers,
But I could never join their revelry,
Join their band of body butchers.
Until one day, the day the food died.

We had to shed our paranoia,
And settle for a world of survival.
We embraced the coming metanoia,
The coming, ‘kill or be killed revival’.
Their blood flowed until it petrified.

And then I ate the world.
